چکیده

Molecular phylogenies provide a framework to discuss relationships in the vast temperate herbaceous radiation of papilionoid legumes comprised of tribes Galegeae, Carmichaelieae, Cicereae, Hedysareae, Trifolieae, Vicieae, as well as among some members of the tropical tribe Millettieae (Callerya, Wisteria, and related genera). The taxa form a monophyletic group marked by the loss of the chloroplast DNA inverted repeat. The sister group to this clade includes Loteae, Coronilleae, and Robinieae. These two clades together comprise a clade we refer to as “Hologalegina”, the monophyly of which is strongly supported by multiple sources of molecular data. Hologalegina is the sister group to the clade comprising Millettieae and the other predominantly Old World tropical tribes Phaseoleae, Abreae, Desmodieae, Psoraleeae, and Indigofereae, contrasting with the traditional view that the largely temperate, herbaceous tribes that form Hologalegina are derived from within Millettieae.

A phylogeny of legumes (Leguminosae) based on analysis of the plastid matK gene resolves many well-supported subclades within the family.

Phylogenetic analysis of 330 plastid matK gene sequences, representing 235 genera from 37 of 39 tribes, and four outgroup taxa from eurosids I supports many well-resolved subclades within the Leguminosae. These results are generally consistent with those derived from other plastid sequence data (rbcL and trnL), but show greater resolution and clade support overall. In particular, the monophyly ...

South African Papilionoid Legumes Are Nodulated by Diverse Burkholderia with Unique Nodulation and Nitrogen-Fixation Loci

The root-nodule bacteria of legumes endemic to the Cape Floristic Region are largely understudied, even though recent reports suggest the occurrence of nodulating Burkholderia species unique to the region. In this study, we considered the diversity and evolution of nodulating Burkholderia associated with the endemic papilionoid tribes Hypocalypteae and Podalyrieae. We identified distinct groups...

The distinct plastid genome structure of Maackia fauriei (Fabaceae: Papilionoideae) and its systematic implications for genistoids and tribe Sophoreae

Traditionally, the tribe Sophoreae sensu lato has been considered a basal but also heterogeneous taxonomic group of the papilionoid legumes. Phylogenetic studies have placed Sophoreae sensu stricto (s.s.) as a member of the core genistoids. The recently suggested new circumscription of this tribe involved the removal of traditional members and the inclusion of Euchresteae and Thermopsideae. Non...

Molecular and ultrastructural analysis of forisome subunits reveals the principles of forisome assembly.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Forisomes are specialized structural phloem proteins that mediate sieve element occlusion after wounding exclusively in papilionoid legumes, but most studies of forisome structure and function have focused on the Old World clade rather than the early lineages. A comprehensive phylogenetic, molecular, structural and functional analysis of forisomes from species covering a bro...
